Every UAE emirate operates its own traffic fine system with separate portals, apps and payment gateways. Dubai fines are managed through RTA channels, Abu Dhabi through police and municipality portals, Sharjah through its own police app, and the northern emirates through federal police systems. You cannot check or pay all fines in one place—each emirate requires a separate query using your traffic file number, vehicle plate or Emirates ID.
1. Understanding the Emirates Fine Structure
The UAE does not have a single national traffic fine database. Each emirate issues and collects its own fines, though some violations—particularly federal highway offences—are recorded centrally and appear when you attempt vehicle registration renewal in your home emirate.
Traffic fines fall into three categories:
- Emirate-specific violations: Issued by local police for offences within that emirate (speeding on emirate roads, parking, Salik non-payment in Dubai)
- Federal highway violations: Issued on inter-emirate highways (E11, E311, E611) and recorded by federal traffic police
- Toll and administrative fines: Salik in Dubai, Darb in Abu Dhabi, and registration-related penalties
When you attempt vehicle registration renewal, the system checks all linked fines across emirates. Outstanding fines from any emirate will block renewal regardless of where your vehicle is registered.
2. Checking Dubai Vehicle Fines
Dubai offers the most integrated fine-checking infrastructure in the UAE. You have four official channels:
RTA Dubai App (Recommended)
Download the RTA Dubai app (iOS or Android), navigate to the Traffic Fines section, and enter your traffic file number or vehicle plate details. The app displays all Dubai Police traffic fines, Salik toll violations, and parking fines issued by Dubai Municipality and private operators contracted by RTA.
The app shows the violation date, location (often with a map pin), fine amount, black points, and whether a discount window is active. Most Dubai traffic fines qualify for a 35% discount if paid within 60 days of issue, reducing to 25% if paid before the vehicle registration renewal deadline.
Dubai Police Website and App
Visit dubaipolice.gov.ae or use the Dubai Police app. Under Services, select Traffic Fine Inquiry. You can search by traffic file number, plate number, or Emirates ID. This portal shows the same Dubai Police fines as the RTA app but does not include Salik or some municipality parking fines.
RTA Website
Go to rta.ae, select Services, then Fines. The web portal mirrors the app functionality but requires manual entry each time. Useful if you're checking multiple vehicles or don't want to install apps.
SMS Service
Send your traffic file number to 6969 (Etisalat) or 6969 (du). You'll receive a summary of outstanding fines and total amount due. This method does not show discount eligibility or violation details.
For a detailed breakdown of Dubai's discount windows and payment options, see the Dubai fine check guide.
3. Checking Abu Dhabi Vehicle Fines
Abu Dhabi uses separate systems for police fines, municipality fines, and Darb toll violations.
Abu Dhabi Police App
Download the Abu Dhabi Police app. Under Traffic Services, select Fines Inquiry. Enter your traffic file number or vehicle plate. The app displays all Abu Dhabi Police traffic fines with violation details, black points, and payment status.
Abu Dhabi offers a 50% discount on traffic fines if paid within 60 days of issue for first-time offenders on certain violation types. The discount is clearly marked in the app when applicable.
Darb Toll Fines
Darb is Abu Dhabi's toll gate system on bridges connecting Abu Dhabi island. Check Darb account balance and fines at darb.ae or through the Darb app. Fines are issued for passing through toll gates without sufficient account balance (AED 50 per violation) and for failing to register a vehicle that uses the gates regularly (AED 100 per occurrence).
Abu Dhabi Municipality Fines
Parking fines issued by Abu Dhabi Municipality (Mawaqif zones) appear in the Abu Dhabi Police app under a separate category. You can also check them at tamm.abudhabi for integrated government services.
4. Checking Sharjah Vehicle Fines
Sharjah Police operates its own fine system, accessible through the Sharjah Police app and website.
Sharjah Police App
Download the Sharjah Police app (available in English and Arabic). Navigate to Traffic Fines, enter your traffic file number or plate details. The app shows all Sharjah Police fines, including those issued on Sharjah roads and some federal highways where Sharjah Police have jurisdiction.
Sharjah Police Website
Visit shjpolice.gov.ae, select eServices, then Traffic Fines Inquiry. The web portal offers the same data as the app. Sharjah offers a 25% discount on selected fines if paid within a specified period, though the discount structure is less predictable than Dubai's.
Sharjah Municipality Parking Fines
Parking fines in Sharjah city centre (Mawaqif Sharjah zones) are managed separately. Check at mawaqif.shj.ae or through the Mawaqif Sharjah app. These fines do not always appear immediately in the Sharjah Police system and must be cleared separately before registration renewal.
5. Checking Fines in Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah
The northern emirates use a combination of local police apps and the federal MOI (Ministry of Interior) system.
MOI UAE App (Federal System)
Download the MOI UAE app. Under Traffic Services, select Traffic Fines. Enter your Emirates ID or traffic file number. This app consolidates fines from the northern emirates and federal highways, though coverage is not always complete in real time.
Emirate-Specific Police Apps
- Ajman Police: ajmanpolice.gov.ae or Ajman Police app
- Ras Al Khaimah Police: rakpolice.gov.ae or RAK Police app
- Umm Al Quwain Police: uaqpolice.gov.ae (web portal only, no dedicated app as of 2025)
- Fujairah Police: fujpolice.gov.ae or Fujairah Police app
Each portal requires your traffic file number or vehicle plate. Fine structures and discount eligibility vary by emirate, and information is not always available in English on smaller emirate portals.
6. Checking All Fines Before Registration Renewal
When renewing vehicle registration at any RTA, Tasjeel, or Wasel centre, the system performs an automatic check across all emirates. Any outstanding fine—regardless of where it was issued—will block renewal until paid.
The most efficient workflow:
- Check Dubai fines via RTA Dubai app
- Check Abu Dhabi fines via Abu Dhabi Police app and darb.ae
- Check Sharjah fines via Sharjah Police app
- Check northern emirates and federal fines via MOI UAE app
- Check all parking fines separately (Dubai Municipality, Mawaqif Sharjah, private operators)
Allow 48 hours after paying any fine for the payment to reflect across all government systems. If you pay a fine and immediately attempt registration renewal, the block may still appear. For the full registration renewal process, see the RTA registration renewal checklist.
7. Common Mistakes That Delay Fine Clearance
Paying through unofficial third-party apps: Some aggregator apps claim to consolidate fines but use unofficial APIs. Payments made through these platforms can take longer to register in government systems or fail to clear the fine entirely.
Not checking all emirate portals: Drivers often check only their home emirate and miss fines from emirates they drove through weeks earlier. A single AED 400 speeding fine on the Abu Dhabi–Dubai highway can block your Dubai registration renewal.
Ignoring black points: Black points accumulate separately from fines. Even if you pay all fines, accumulated black points (24 points within one year for light vehicles) trigger a licence suspension. Check your black point total in the RTA or police apps regularly, especially if you drive a high-performance vehicle. Owners of sports cars and supercars should be particularly vigilant.
Missing discount deadlines: Dubai's 35% discount window closes 60 days after the violation. Waiting until registration renewal often means paying full price. Set a monthly reminder to check fines.
Assuming Salik is not a fine: Unpaid Salik toll charges escalate into fines (AED 50 per unpaid toll plus the original toll amount). These appear as traffic fines in the RTA system and block registration. Keep your Salik account topped up or use the auto-recharge feature.
8. Payment Methods Across Emirates
Most emirate portals accept credit/debit card payments directly through their apps or websites. Dubai also accepts payment at RTA customer service centres, Tasjeel and Wasel kiosks, and selected Exchange houses. Abu Dhabi accepts payment at police stations, some petrol stations, and through the Tamm portal.
For fleet operators or corporate account holders managing multiple vehicles, bulk payment options are available through dedicated RTA and police portals. Contact the relevant emirate's traffic department for corporate payment gateway access.
9. What to Do If a Fine Is Incorrect
If you believe a fine was issued in error—wrong plate number, you were not driving the vehicle, or the violation details are incorrect—you can contest it through the issuing emirate's traffic department.
In Dubai, file an objection through the RTA Dubai app under Traffic Fines > Object to Fine. You'll need to upload supporting evidence (rental agreement showing someone else was driving, proof the vehicle was in a garage for repair at the time, or dashcam footage). The objection must be filed within 30 days of the fine being issued.
In Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, objections are filed through the police app or in person at a traffic department office. Response times vary from one week to several months depending on the complexity of the case.
Do not ignore a fine while waiting for an objection response. If the objection is rejected, the discount window may have closed and you'll pay the full amount.
10. Pre-Purchase Fine Checks
When buying a used car in the UAE, always check for outstanding fines before completing the sale. The buyer is not legally responsible for fines issued before the date of sale, but in practice, any unpaid fine blocks registration transfer.
Insist that the seller clears all fines before you sign the sale agreement. Run a fine check across all emirates using the methods above. If the seller refuses to clear fines, factor the total fine amount (without discounts, since you won't qualify) into your negotiation or walk away.
A comprehensive pre-purchase inspection should include a fine and registration status check alongside the mechanical assessment. At JAD Garage in Al Quoz, pre-purchase inspections for European and EV models include a full review of the vehicle's registration history and any linked fines.
European or EV Pre-Purchase Inspection in Al Quoz
Before buying a used European or electric vehicle, get a full mechanical inspection and registration status check at JAD Garage, Warehouse No.1, Street 8, Al Quoz 4. Call +971 56 355 6113 to book.
